"I don't know whether addiction is principally genetic, a result of emotional injury, or a combination of both. But all that matters is what I do today. Insights don't cure the addict any more than insight cures diabetes. You may understand perfectly well how diabetes works, but if you don't take your insulin, you're dead. The same is true with addiction. it doesn't matter what got you there, it's how you conduct yourself today, day by day"

..... Dear Mister SomeOne Out-There.....
When I wrote my poem Mister Someone Out-There I was calling out to somebody, or something, for help. I was down. Very very down. Rock bottomed in fact. When you get into a state like that life becomes almost unbearable. But the key word in that sentence is ALMOST. If you believe that life is ALMOST unbearable then the ALMOST gives that little glimmer of hope, that little speck of light, something to hold on to for dear life. And THAT is the time that we surrender to our emotions. We are in an area of the UNKNOWN, you could even refer to it as the DARK. But because it is an area of major discomfort, an area we are not used to dealing with, then we are injected with a drug that we don't want or need. That drug is FEAR. It is the worst type of drug that we can be introduced to. It grabs a hold of you and scares the very BEING out of you. It makes you believe things that are not true. It makes you hear voices. It creates paranoia. You begin to believe things that are not real...........

...needs LOVE more than methodone...
But what does the term 'addicted' really mean. Out on the streets I eat with drug addicts, alcoholics, and other addicted types. They make up a good portion of the homeless world. Some addicts let the world see their addictions through their behavior. Other addicts are very good at hiding their addictions. I know a lot of them. Many of these addicts are very intelligent, usually come from successful backgrounds, and are trying to deal with the traumas and tragedies that have made them addicts and homeless. Some live in cars, vans, some live on the streets. They all have a story to tell. I have heard many of them. The stories make you cry. The bad addicts usually have more than one addiction. Drug addicts often are alcoholics and can suffer other addictions such as gambling and even sex addictions. But there is one thing that these addicts are addicted for. They need to run away from the reality of their lives. The lost children, broken families, broken hearts, broken lives...... PURE FEAR they do not want to, or cannot, face in their everyday existence. The fear causes the voices in their heads. The fear makes them be addicted because it LESSENS the pain of reality......

.... it makes us ALL even again, huh?
Many of you will have read my BLOG about my friend Matty. He was an addict with multiple addictions. Matty was scared. He was running away from his own reality. He didn't want to face the FEAR. But he didn't deserve to die. He was a nice man and believe it or not he had certain values and stuck by them, moreso than a lot of 'normal' people. As much as this sounds weird addicts are addicted to their own addictions. One of those addictions is the FEAR OF FEAR. I know because I have lived in their world. I have watched them. They are addicted to the FEAR OF FEAR. They are trying to deal with their core addiction. Not the alcohol, not the cocaine, the ICE, the ecstacy. They are addicted to the FEAR that they are hiding from. Until one of these brilliant scientists or psychologists, or sociologists gets out on the streets and LIVES with these people, then they JUST won't get it. A tiny percentage of the addicted addicts will make it out, not with the methodone program, not with the rehab. They need to find the one thing in their life that will stop the FEAR, stop the ADDICTION of the ADDICTION. It's a pretty simple fix. It's called ........
