"To be a superstar you must do something exceptional. The most common response to The Dip is to play it safe. Most people suck it up and try to AVERAGE their way to success. Which is why so few end up the best in the world"
- Seth Godin, Author "The Dip", Internet Marketer
It means getting hurt. It means embarrassment. It means hardship. It means sadness. It means loneliness. It means heartbreak. It means an awful amount of grief in your life trying to become THE BEST.
WELCOME TO MY WORLD.......
Let's say in the Western world there are about 3 billion of weee dots. So three thousand million people all wanting, wishing, dreaming to be the BEST at something. Hmmmm........ Pretty stiff competition to begin with, huh? A whole lotta ideas. Out of that 3 billion you may get 3 million become the best in their field. That's one in one thousand or 0.1%. Now Seth is a bit over generous and says that maybe 2% can become the best. Anyway which ever way you look at the figures it is ALMOST impossible to become THE best. One of the best? Hmmm....... maybe!
Then there's the PREPARATION. Oh maaaan, my heads starting to hurt with all of this stuff! Hmmmm...... If you haven't fallen off the "I wanna be the BEST" perch by now then hang on 'cause it gets a whole lot worse.
Malcolm Gladwell, legendary author of the 'Tipping Point', talks about the 10,000 hour rule in one of his other books 'Outliers' and gives examples of THE BEST such as Bill Gates and The Beatles in that if they hadn't have committed over 10,000 hours to their preparation they were unlikely to have succeeded. In other words a whole lotta hard work over and above what most people consider "normal". Getting scaaary 'ain't it dot?
Then there is another REAL problem that none of the books I have read (as you know LOTS!) give any time to. When you have been able to hang on through all the hard stuff, prepared for over 10,000 hours, and made huuuge sacrifices then you have to be good, reeeeaally good. Because when you get to the business end of this whole exercise you have to start dealing with THE BEST (a lot of the time self proclaimed) in the particular field you are wanting to become the best in. So you have to outsmart, outdeal, outlogic, outwit, outmanage those that are considered to be the BEST already. YOU have to become THE BEST OF THE BEST! And seeing as though that's wot's happening in MY world right now, I can tell you, it 'ain't easy greasy! But if you are one craaaazzzeeeee dude like me and are prepared to go the whole way, then the best bit of advice I can give any dreamer is "Memento Mori", "Remember You Will Die". It sounds a pathetic mantra, but if you are really serious then every day, when you wake up ask yourself if you will make it through the day and be able to say proudly "I HAD A CRACK!"
Make DEATH become life's greatest CHANGE agent............
